Knights in Action

On Veterans Day, November 11th, St. Timothy’s council #12834 of Laguna Niguel, CA participated in the American Wheelchair Mission Sunday program as advertised and supported by Brother Jack Cleary at the K of C State Convention last spring in northern California.

Our council immediately saw the benefits of this program and made a commitment to support this activity.  We met with our pastor early to gain his support and ideas on how to make this program a success.  He was very supportive and allowed us to place an “easy up booth” in our courtyard, along with a wheelchair sample, American Flags, posters and containers to collect the money that 6 Knights were holding before and after each of the 5 masses we had on that weekend.

Our Monsignor John Urell gave a very heartfelt two-minute verbal announcement to the congregation that he read and the rest is history.  What made this totally unique was not only did the Knights promote it; our entire congregation supported it and worked hard to make it successful.  Truly, this is a case of Knights in Action, with the support of the entire St. Timothy’s congregation to make this program work so well.

With the combined efforts of our church and council, we raised $10,800 in one weekend, enough to purchase 72 wheelchairs for our men and women military veterans here in Orange and San Diego County.  The wheelchairs will be blessed by the bishop, and distributed on Memorial Day weekend 2013 through 3 VA hospitals and 7 clinics in Southern California.
