Chapter News March

My Brothers,

I used to think that the time between January 6 and Ash Wednesday was sort of a down time.  Relax and wrap up the Christmas Holiday season, settle back into the routine of regular daily life, and get ready for Easter when Lent begins.  This is anything but true if you are a Knight of Columbus in Orange County!

On January 23rd, we celebrated Clergy Night at St. Joachim’s Parish Hall in Costa Mesa. We broke with our tradition of no speeches or presentations this year.  San Diego Chapter President John Bertrand shared his tribute video to Bishop Cirilo Flores as our evening’s opening event.  Over 400 meals were served.  Bishop Vann, who had been out of state, was able to attend in time for dinner. I believe that he stopped at every table in the hall before the evening was completed.  Special thanks to the Knights of Jubilee Council and Grand Knight Todd Thompson and his wife Martha.  They did the lion’s share of set up and clean up.  We were served again by the St. Pius V Youth group (SPY).  Although we had some initial confusion on the seating, everyone remained cordial and by 7:10 everyone was seated and enjoying the moment remembering Bishop Cirilo and in fellowship with our Priests.

Most of our District Deputies have completed their District Basketball Free Throw competitions and are  now ready to take the challenge at Chapter.  Brother Don Ehrman will conduct that championship at St. Norbert’s in Orange on Saturday, February 28, 2015.  District Deputies are reminded to ensure that their competitors have the correct forms and hopefully, will be attending the Chapter free throw along with them.  Shooting starts at 8:00 am.  Councils that have local winners competing at Chapter are encouraged to send representatives to support your team.

Essays have been collected and Chairman Abe James and his team are now in the process of evaluating them.  Winners will be announced soon.

District 117 and the Knights of Fr. Kass Council in Buena Park conducted a 3rd Degree Exempification at St. Pius the V on Sunday, February 22.  This was a great success and the size of the class was more in tune with the guidelines that ask us to keep the number of candidates between 35 and 60.  Another Exemplification has been approved for Saturday, April 25th, at St. Angela Merici (Council 9511) in Brea.

The Orange County Catholic Newspaper and the Orange County Register are still offering the incredible deal of a year’s subscription to the Orange County Catholic and the Sunday Register for a price of One Cent.  This is a limited time offer.  Subscription forms and mailing envelopes will be available at the Chapter meeting.  One form can have many subscribers so this a deal that you can offer in your Parish!  The one restriction is that this deal is not offered to current subscribers to the OC Register Sunday paper.

The 37th Annual Day of Sharing is approaching.  Mark your Council Calendars for Saturday, April 18th.  Please contact PCP Steve Bolton to let him that your Council would like participate and in what capacity.  Game booths go quickly so if you have a particular booth in mind for your Council, reserve it early.  Also, hopefully all of our Knights received their raffle tickets which fund this terrific charitable event.  Please send your money in soon so we can see how strong our operating budget for this event is.

Our Worthy State Treasurer, Brother Sonny Santa Inez will also attend our meeting this month.  He will be making award presentations to Councils 3926, 5385, 9594, 10590, 12834, 15065, and 15719.  I ask the each of these Councils ensure that they have at least one representative present to receive their award.

As usual, the meeting will take place at 7:30 pm, this Thursday, February 26, at St. Joachim’s in Costa Mesa.  Jubilee Council will be serving a light supper starting at 7:00.  Come and join your Brothers from other Councils throughout the County and find out what else is happening.

Vivat Jesus!

Yours in service,
Jack Haney
President, Orange County Chapter
